Mayfly Day 05:00
let the wind blow and the sun shine and the evening light fall on the climbing vine when it climbs too high gardener cuts it down blossoms fall and make no sound let the fruiting bodies eat what decays other world not flower not beast let's go for a walk take my hand mountains of bone sleep under cement ~ a wood grows where a sea was where a city once drowned who are you, dreaming under my feet? tectonic timpani swell in a century in a mayfly day headlines disintegrate the night is cold I see no stars meaning is still sleeping behind bars for now a bird is only a bird and the dark clouds forming are just a summer storm
2.
during the day the dogs are chained at night they race through the stars the mountains beside the school for the blind are glowing the motor bike you learned to ride is rusting during the day the dogs are chained at night they race through the stars did you drain the sea, did you fill the sky with ashes? nameless tongue and fathomless eye, no answer during the day the dogs are chained at night they race through the stars
3.
Baba Yaga 06:18
what do I know about the progress of sparrows what do I know about the plight of the dodo what do I know about the lizard's dream, or the butterfly's lust what do I know about stalagmites and sinkholes in the earth what do I know about the ultimate undying love that burns through light and time and never says "I've had my fill now, that's enough" go visit Baba Yaga find the talking snake in the garden rob the grave of a fallen idol give birth to an ancient curse I don't care whatever gets you off what do I know about the bruises on the face of the sea what do I know about the rain of thorns, the tourniquet of bees what do I know about the hurricane up your billowing sleeve what do I know about baby blue eyes and fireweed go visit Baba Yaga find the talking snake in the garden rob the grave of a fallen idol give birth to an ancient curse I don't care whatever gets you off
4.
Land Animal 05:44
rocketing through dark clouds hardened shell, not a nerve exposed snow whirls in a blind dance unbodied hunger drinks from my bones make me a home in the mountainside where there's no cell phone tower where wild goats climb I wasn't born to fly I'm a land animal no flicker of light no whisper of warning I feel nothing sacred awaken in my bones cargo of flesh and precious metal engine roars on in darkness wildfires glow down below make me a home in the mountainside where there's no cell phone tower where wild goats climb I wasn't born to fly I'm a land animal how long can we stay here is there a seed that will birth a new world why don't we ask that witch in the desert if she still lives there, if she still lives at all I don't know make me a home in the mountainside where there's no cell phone tower where wild goats climb I wasn't born to fly I'm a land animal
5.
she had been dreaming of insects and operations lock feelers with me, my love draw closer your exoskeleton slow motion storm on the sun darkens our terrarium I dream of you crawling under a stone burrowing deep under cover of snow beasts at the waste witch's door scrabbling and clawing for love return to me in any form we'll bask in the transient sun
6.
Open a Door 04:59
open a door there's a bowl of cherries on a table window is open on a clear blue sky no wind blows open a door there's a banquet frozen in mid-motion revelers petrified touched by the tendrils of a ghost open a door there's an albino hare beneath a lamppost cherry gumdrop eyes shine in soft white snow open a door there's a wreck overturned along a highway birdsong weaves a brocade with plumes of smoke open a door there's a pulsing red lit cathedral the heart is buried underground safe from the breath of frost

about

Recorded in Bethlehem PA with Taylor Galassi on cello, on the evening of December 4th, 2018.
Nine years earlier we recorded the first Bethlehem Tapes album: claraengel.bandcamp.com/album/the-bethlehem-tapes.

All songs were recorded live off the floor, and almost all in one take. Additional overdubs were added at a later date.

A big thank you to David Buchta, Konstantinos Diamantis, Chris D'Iorio, Andrew Erlich, Nicholas Field, Logan Ford, Sophia Harman-Heath, Jane Heath, Nancy Heath, Larry Lamb, Malin, Stephanie Merrin, Ander Swift, Simona Turini, Milo Voo.

- Music Won't Save You

"By the time “Open a Door” closes this leg of our journey with Engel, Where a City Once Drowned deposits its listeners on a precipice; It’s unclear whether twilight is turning into night or darkness is about to recede into morning, but I believe that’s the point —and the magic — Clara Engel conjures throughout." - DOMINIONATED

"The lyrics are reminiscent of Walt Whitman's free-form verse, full of abstract observations and themes that circle and double-back throughout. The album creates the feeling of being a witness to Engel's spiritual journey, rather than recipients of a specific message." - Exclaim!

"The Bethlehem Tapes Vol. II feels like an episode of a holy book, a story performed in music that intrigues and lays our heads to rest at the same time." - Yeah I Know it Sucks

"As water fountains forth from a spring and the nightingale calls out in the stillness of dawn, tranquility is embodied in a rippling otherworldly charm in Toronto avant folk singer-songwriter Clara Engel’s Mayfly Day" - Ride the Tempo

"...melancholic but also laced with a twinge of hope." - Captive Balance
